University of Cambridge International Scholarship Scheme, 2019-2020

On behalf of the University, the Cambridge Trust is offering the Cambridge International Scholarships to pursue PhD studies for 2019-2020 academic year. International students are eligible for these scholarships.

The aim of the Cambridge International Scholarships is to ensure that the 250 highest ranked students, irrespective of nationality, receive full financial support to undertake research leading to a PhD.

The Cambridge Commonwealth, European & International Trust was established on 1 August 2013 from the merger of the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust and the Cambridge Overseas Trust.  These were established as charities by the University of Cambridge in the 1980s in order to provide financial support for international students on degree courses at Cambridge.


Today, the Trust is the largest provider of funding for international students at Cambridge, working with partners worldwide to support students of outstanding academic merit under a variety of scholarship schemes.

Scholarship Description:

Application Deadline: There will be two general course deadlines of December 5, 2018 and January 3, 2019.
Course Level: Scholarships are available to pursue research programm leading to the PhD (including CPGS) at the University of Cambridge.
Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded in all available research courses at the University of Cambridge.
Scholarship Award: Full financial support to undertake research leading to a PhD.  The Scholarships composition Fee and a maintenance allowance sufficient for a single person. In order to maximize the number of Scholarships awarded, the Trust will, when appropriate, promote winners of Vice-Chancellor’s Awards and Cambridge International Scholarships to other full-cost awards with UK Research Councils, or partner organisations, or Departments or Colleges, who are willing to provide either the full amount or part of the cost of the scholarship.  Where part of the cost of a scholarship is offered, the Trust will meet the balance.

All students, irrespective of nationality, are eligible to be considered for funding by the Trust.
Status

The Trust does not accept applications from students who are part-way through a course at Cambridge, unless they are applying for funding towards a higher degree course following graduation.

Degree level


  • Applicants must be intending to start a course at the level of undergraduate (excluding UK/EU applicants), Masters (such as MPhil, MASt, LLM), or research postgraduate (such as PhD).
  • Please note that the Trust does not offer many scholarships to students on undergraduate courses, and has many more scholarship programme available to postgraduate students.  Approximately 85% of the scholarships awarded each year are to students taking Masters or PhD degrees.
  • The Trust will not normally support students at a degree level that is the same as, or lower than, a degree they already hold, with two exceptions – we will consider an application from a student who is required to take a second Masters degree at Cambridge in order to gain admission to the PhD here, or from an international (non-EU) student who is proposing to study as an affiliated student at Cambridge for a second BA degree.

  • The Trust does not have scholarships available for post-doctoral positions, or for visiting or exchange students
  • The Trust does not have scholarships available for part-time postgraduate degrees, and part-time undergraduate study is not available at the University of Cambridge.
  • English Language Requirements: Applicants from outside the home country will often need to meet specific English language/other language requirements in order to be able to study there.



Application Procedure:

How to Apply: All applicants should submit the Graduate scholarship form ticking the box to apply to the Cambridge Trust and completing Sections B3 (Cambridge Trust Personal Statement) and B4 (Financial Details for the Cambridge Trust). All students must be admitted to the University of Cambridge through the normal application procedures. The Trust plays no role in the admission of applicants to the University, and is not able to influence the chances of an applicant being offered a place.
